The smelliest addition to Colorado Boulevard brings along with it a massive selection, expert advice, and a whole lot of cheese. Now this isn’t your mama’s Kraft singles I’m talking about. This is a connoisseur’s dream of cheeses from all over the world, packed into a shop smack dab in the most up-and-coming neighborhood of LA County. Milkfarm opened last month, and since then has made itself known as an easy-going, affordable cheese shop where expert and amateur patrons can sample exotic cheeses without any of the snootiness some upscale cheese shops seem to have. Milkfarm is the first of its kind in the area, and it is sure to continue on with great success. Milkfarm is the one stop shop for a delicious picnic lunch. Aside from cheese they offer freshly poured olive oil, artisan bread, pate, salamis, olives, fresh pasta, sauces, and cornichons. Take a different kind of lunch break at Milkfarm, where between the hours of 11am and 3pm, you can stop in to enjoy one of their artfully crafted sandwiches or charcuterie boards.
As the artisan cheese shop builds a following, I believe a new flavor will be making its way to Eagle Rock; one which includes more specialty gourmet shops. Next time you’re in, try a sample of the Midnight Moon, Idiazabal Spain, or the Piave Vecchio Italy cheeses. Each represents its location with distinctly different delicious flavors and textures, which you can learn more about simply by asking one of the cheese experts on location. Respect the joys of cheese, as it takes time to age, so it should take time to enjoy. Ask questions, and learn about how the cheese was made, who made it, and the best recipes and pairings. Cheese is certainly an art form, and those who appreciate it will understand its magic. Introduce a cheese course after your Sunday night family dinner, accompanied by a good wine and conversation. Milkfarm will certainly pave the way for a wave of new gourmet consumption spaces in Eagle Rock. I wish it all the best. Now for it to just add an Occidental College student discount.
