I woke up with a craving. It had happened several times before. I needed to seek out some Thai food before the day was done. For me, Thai food is the soul food of Asian cuisine. I was looking for something different this time. I feel like all the thai restaurants i had been to lately had been good, but the atmosphere was never very special. I wanted something that would warm my soul as much as pad thai does. So, as most people from LA do when they are looking for unique ambiances, i ventured off into Hollywood. Down sunset, right next to one of my favorite shops, Popkiller, a small building stood in the darkness. This building is home to Toi, now my favorite Thai restaurant in LA. The restaurant resembled more of a punk rock and roll bar than a restaurant. The room was kept dark, with posters covering all the walls, and a huge screen showing old commercials hung on the wall. It was perfect. I wouldn’t suggest it as a place to bring your grandparents, but for a date, it’s a great spot. I started off with pork Shu Mai, Won Ton Soup, and a dish they call, Thai Toast (toasted bread with a ground chicken and chili mixture on top). Everything was simply made, and very fresh, just how I like my Thai. The Thai Iced Tea, although, had a strange chalky taste, and was much much sweeter than I like my Thai Tea. For my main, I shared the vegetarian curry and pad tai with a few friends I was dining with. The curry had just the right amount of spice, and went superbly over brown rice. The pad tai was equally tasty, simply made and traditional. The curry and pad tai was enough to feed the four of us comfortably. So if you’re looking for a very unique ambiance with some down right tasty Thai, check out Toi, and enjoy the neighborhood that surrounds.
